📖 How to Play Xiangqi

Objective

Xiangqi, or Chinese Chess, is a river-crossing strategy game. Your goal is to trap the other General so it cannot escape check.

How to Play

Red moves first. Click one of your pieces, then click a highlighted point to move or capture. The General stays inside the palace and may never face the enemy General on an open file. Advisors move diagonally in the palace. Elephants move two diagonal points, can be blocked, and cannot cross the river. Horses move in an L shape, but a nearby piece can block their leg. Chariots move like rooks. Cannons move like rooks, but capture only by jumping exactly one piece. Soldiers march forward; after crossing the river, they may also step sideways.

How to Win

Win by checkmate: the enemy General is under attack and has no legal move or block. In Xiangqi, a player with no legal moves also loses by stalemate.

Tips

Keep guards near your palace, open lines for Chariots and Cannons, and push river-crossed Soldiers together. Always check whether the two Generals can see each other before ending your turn.
